NBC: Herpes Can Invade the Brain

In some people, the herpes virus can directly invade the brain, where it inflames the brain’s lining. This process is called herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Dr. Haman said, “In some cases it can get into the spinal fluid and cause inflammation around the brain and around the linings of the brain. It’s usually mild and can be treated, but in some cases if it’s left untreated, it can progress to severe disease and even death (1).” Importantly, the Mayo Clinic says herpes encephalitis is a “primary infection (that) may be a reactivation of a virus that had been inactive (latent) after a previous illness.” (See the Mayo Clinic, from May 5, 2011) (2). polyDNA therefore recommends that individuals infected with the herpes virus speak to their doctors about Gene-Eden-VIR. “Two types of antiviral treatments against HSV are available: topical and oral. These drugs are used to “shorten the clinical course, prevent complications, prevent development of latency and subsequent recurrences, (and) decrease transmission (3)” of the herpes virus. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day (4).”
