From twitter, with love...

Could a social networking microblog system be used as a tool to foster world peace?

Twitterables

If you're one of the millions of people who don’t like what they see in the mirror, then this is the place for you!

Google is reportedly pitching YouTube as a TV network. Is that a wise move? It's up for debate!

Cooking with the twitterer: Pumpkin Cupcakes

FRESH From the twitterer's test kitchen!

With the witches of Halloween getting ready to fly this month, what better a tasty treat to relish than Pumpkin Cupcakes!

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon pumpkin-pie spice

2-1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1-1/2 cups granulated sugar

3/4 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree

4 eggs

Frosting:

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1 box (16 ounces) confectioner's sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons milk, plus more if needed

Orange food coloring

Fine and coarse orange decorating sugar

Pretzel sticks the twitterer uses cinnamon sticks instead!

Directions

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Line 12 mini cupcake pan indents and 12 regular indents with foil or paper liners. Line 6 jumbo cupcake indents with foil or paper liners.

2. For cupcakes: In a medium-size bowl, whisk flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, baking powder and salt together until well blended; set aside.

3. Beat sugar, vegetable oil, buttermilk, pumpkin puree and eggs in a large bowl on low speed for 2 minutes or until combined. Add flour mixture and beat for 2 more minutes or until just combined.

4. Divide among liners, filling each about 2/3 full.

5. Bake at 350°F for about 12 minutes for the minis, 18 minutes for the regulars and 26 minutes for the jumbos, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.

6. For frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter in a large bowl on high for 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. Gradually add the confectioner's sugar, vanilla and milk and beat until smooth and a good spreading consistency, 2 minutes. Add an additional tablespoon of milk if mixture is too thick.

7. Divide the frosting into two bowls and tint to different shades of orange with food coloring. Mound the frosting on top of cupcakes and make rounded. Roll the entire cupcake in the sugar to coat or roll just edges in sugar, alternating between fine and corase sugars as desired. To make indentations, press a wooden skewer on top of the sugared cupcake. Top with cinnamon sticks.

Twit Happens!

Here's a very entertaining article regarding legal issues with using twitter for business purposes. I really don't see most mommiebloggers running into this kind of circumstance, but you just never know!

Mommy Marketing

Despite their lightweight moniker, mommy bloggers have become marketing business heavyweights. Now said to number in the millions, these online women have cobbled together content networks that rival some mainstream media companies. And they're clearly a force that retailers underestimate at their own peril. ~ AdAge

Ever wonder how advertisers try to figure out how to appeal to mommiebloggers like us? Here's a clue:

Unlike traditional advertising and promotions, which offer myriad ways to reach the consumer, the online space is on hyper-drive. Low barriers to entry and tech-savvy citizens across the globe offer up new marketing tactics on a daily (perhaps hourly) basis.

And that target Alpha Mom gets savvier and savvier, one day focusing her energy on original content, the next on product reviews. She's setting up a Facebook page, becoming a regular player on game sites, recording podcasts and setting up her own YouTube channel. And, in the meantime, new social media moms pour into the blogosphere and social media space.

So, that's how they think about us!

the twitterer vows to lose weight like Charlene Chao!

Charlene Chao! She's so pretty!

Uh-oh! A quick glance at the scale told me a terrible tale: a weight gain! How could this be? Why did this happen? I haven't changed a thing as far as my diet or daily routine. So I'm kicking my personal physical fitness program up a notch, and while I'm not as big as Charlene Chao was, I don't intend to be!

Measuring Readership

Do any of you tweeple use any online tools to gauge how many visitors come to your blog or website each day?

Your twitterer is now using three measurement aids: scroll to the bottom right column and you'll see "At The Feeder," which is Google's tracking numbers for this blog. Just above that you'll see another widget displaying PR, alexa numbers and other information.

You may notice I've re-arranged the sidebar a bit and added a newsfeed where you can click through to the latest twitter and facebook news!

For the time being I'm also using radarstats, which doesn't seem to pick up all visitors. I may remove it shortly (if I haven't already by the tiem you read this!) In comparing data, it looks as if radarstats cannot see older browsers and some mobile phone browsers.

Twitter News For Saturday October 16

Late-night comedienne Chelsea Handler took a jab at Nick Cannon on her Twitter feed -- (making fun of celebrities is what she does) -- Cannon took it extremely personally. The feud is ON!

SOMEone is making money with twitter, and his initials are A.K.! America's CBS has purchased yet another Twitter feed concept from Ashton Kutcher for development into a TV series.

Twitter's redesign is not the end!

Tweetology 101

HOW much attention is the 100th anniversary meeting of the Association of National Advertisers paying to the growing importance of social media like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to help reach consumers? Well, speakers are saying “fans,” “like” and “hash tag” almost as often as “touch points,” “benchmark” and “prioritize.” More from the New York Times.

Meanwhile, rapper Kanye West has chosen 15 supermodels as the ONLY account holders he'll follow on twitter! (Smells like a publicity stunt to this girl!)

nittyGriddy superblogger Ingrid Abboud writes on Famous Bloggers:  I’m not gonna beat around the bush. I’m simply not the ‘you follow me, I follow you’ kind of Twitter gal! If you like what you see and want to follow me, my tweets and blog, then by all means “Ahlan Wa Sahlan” [an Arabic saying meaning - you're welcome, come on in....] But you can be damn sure that for every new follower I get, I will take the time to check their tweets and profile as well as their link if they have one...

Ah, there you are!

Cooking with the twitterer: Holiday Treats

As I was looking through my recipe files last week, a thought crossed my mind: what about parents who are too busy to follow complex recipes? Or people who live alone and either don't have the time to prepare a cake or pie, or don't want to spend money on a batch of ingredients to make something that "no one else but me" will eat?

Yet when we see magazine articles about Holiday Cooking and Baking or remember childhood treats, some of us wonder why we can't "make something nice like that" or we hold back a tear remembering the love that a parent put into a cake or pie or cookies or brownies.

Yesterday I stopped by a Dollar Store and a pharmacy. I noticed that both shops carried lines of bakery products that were quite inexpensive. Here are TWO that I found really usefuL. (I'm not putting "brand names" to these because some companies turn out anywhere from five to twenty different "brands" of the exact same product, including "store brands.")

My first purchase was at the pharmacy: 69 cents for an envelope of blueberry muffin mix. This stuff was great! All you add is water, pour the batter in a greased muffin tray and bake for 28 minutes! The muffins were truly amazing, the kids ate every single one!

Later in the day I was running so far behind with my errands I decided we'd have "fast food" for dinner, since the evening was peppered with appointments and commitments of various family members. The Dollar Store had boxes of bread mix, at $1 each, and I chose "Apple Bread with Apple Bits." All you do is add 3/4 cup of water and one egg, mix, pour the mixture into a greased baking pan, and bake about 55 minutes. To give it pizzazz, I sprinkled pumpkin pie spice on top. Once tucked in the oven, I got out my "fast food" order sheet, made the call-to-order, and within 35 minutes we were sitting down to dinner. The bread was done as we were eating, and after a few minutes on the cooling rack, it was ready to be served... another great treat for the kids, and a dessert that went excellently well with the adults' coffee!

Any cake that wouldn't be gone by bedtime would be placed in a container, but that was not the case: every bit was gone by 9pm!

SO: Little money, little time, little guilt, great treats... and of course we'll prepare the "special" homemade goodies on those evenings and Saturdays when we have more "time"! (Check out the Amazon linky!) Happy Cooking from the twitterer!

Scrubs!

Scrubs are the formal term for the apparel worn by nurses, surgeons, and other medical personnel who must "scrub" or otherwise prep for medical procedures. They are designed to be easy to launder, and inexpenisve to replace.

In my "real world" professional life, I work at a major hospital. I have a wardrobe filled with hospital attire, garments such as Medical Scrubs, lab coats, Designer Nursing Uniforms, and Surgical Scrub Hats by blue sky scrubs™

I chose blue sky scrub uniforms because they are durable, fashionable and functional! Their line of medical uniforms, available on the net, can be shipped anywhere in the world! (If you're looking for new scrubs, I recommend blue sky!)

Your twitterer is getting into a spooky holiday groove! There's a plethora of holiday fun at Halloween For Kids! Now is a great time to start experimenting with Halloween photography, and I'll be capturing a few ghostly images myself on the 31st.

What about costumes? I was thinking of dressing up as Ke$ha, as hubby and I will be in Portland at the end of October!

Costume Quest, the next game from the Psychonauts and Brutal Legend studio DoubleFine — and more importantly, the only trick-or-treating role-playing game of the year — will be released on October 20!

Just in time for the pumpkin holiday, your child can make this Fun House Mirror for free at the Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinic.

Coming Soon: the twitterer's Halloween recipes!

Think About Webhosting...

If you run a small or medium business or plan to set up a business online, you are going to need a computer permanently connected to the web so you can send email, files, etc. to other sites and to your customers. You need hosting! The scope of hosting services varies widely. A customer needs to evaluate the requirements of an application to choose what kind of hosting to use.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

Managed Hosting solutions give you the flexibility to focus on your business while someone else manages your servers. You manage and control your own data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.

Most importantly, if you are concerned about the safety and security of your data, the buzzword is COLOCATION: Your server hardware is stored in a secure, climate-controlled environment. This alternative is similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server.

Now that you know more about hosting, make it a point to investigate and make hosting an integral part of your business plan!

Fail Whale Tales

I notice a lot of twitter updates are running late - very late - and the feed through from the twitterer's twitter account to this blog runs extremely late and sometimes not at all.

It took Evan Williams, co-founder of Twitter, a lot more than 140 characters to explain why he is stepping down as CEO... Meanwhile, Chris O'Brien asks whether Dick Costolo, who on Monday was named CEO of Twitter, is the right person for the job. New York Magazine writes - How are you going to convince advertisers and future stockholders that your company is the go-to source for real-time updates if your own feed is yesterday's news? Worse, Costolo's employees were already throwing out zingers into the news feed. Twitter's communications guy, Sean Garrett, wrote, "OH: The site has had 100% downtime since I've been CEO." Co-founder Biz Stone quipped, "Our #newtwitter was designed to be easier, faster, and richer but our #newtwitterceo is faster, older, and balder!"

Twitter has unveiled a new "Promoted Accounts" category empowering advertisers to push their brand accounts in the "Suggestions for you" section. "Promoted Accounts" is in the testing mode and only a "handful of companies" will be able to promote their Twitter accounts.

One more! Peanuts' Charlie Brown Gets Facebook Page, Twitter Account, and New TV Movie!

'Facebook' Flick #1 in the U.S.

"The Social Network" has topped the US box office upon its release. $23 million is just the beginning of what this picture is going to take in. The movie, directed by David Fincher, is about the CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg.

It is unclear why Zuckerberg's longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan is MIA in "The Social Network," MTV seperates fact from fiction.

Interestingly enough, Facebook went to see the Facebook movie!

Cooking With The Twitterer: Cinnamon-Vanilla Sauce

This is a really delicious sauce you can drizzle over a bowl of cut-up fresh fruit an dazzle your friends and family with your creative cooking talents!

1/2 cup Granulated White Sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 12oz. can Evaporated Milk
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
6 cups assorted fruit (mangoes, bananas, melons, starfruit, grapes, papayas, apples, berries)
Ground Cinnamon

You'll need a medium saucepan, set to "medium" heat. Mix sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon together, gradually stirring in the evaporated milk. Stir constantly as the mixture continues cooking, remove from the heat when it comes to boil. Stir in the vanilla extract and refrigerate for two hours before serving. Any leftover sauce will keep in the ref for about 5 days! Enjoy! Tweet this recipe if you like it!

Tyra Banks Twittercism

Wacky Supermodel Tyra Banks became a hot and funny topic on Twitter when she wore a ‘super cheap’ homemade fishnet mask to a French Vogue party in Paris and invited comments!

After sending up two TwitPics of herself in the "mask" Banks challenged her followers to guess just what exactly her bizarre - and, according to her, "super cheap" - mask was made out of. As it turns out, Tyra Tweeted: "sum cheap FISHNET stockings I got n crazy store n Paris! I cut em up n made it y’all. N did my own hair n makeup."

EntertainmentWise.com has the last tweet: “Just when we thought Tyra Banks couldn’t get any scarier – she goes and wears a weird net thing on her head.”

NPR TWITTER SURVEY

US-based National Public Radio (NPR) says its Twitter followers are “more news centric” than its Facebook fans, asking for hard news and breaking news above everything else (Facebook fans wanted offbeat stories the most, followed by hard news). But Twitter followers say they click links less often than Facebook fans — a discovery than NPR says is reflected in its referral numbers.

I find that when I'm tweeting I don't click on links. That's because I'm on the go, reading your tweets on my smartphone! I rarely go on twitter from my laptop, although I do settle down on my (extremely private) Facebook page!

28% of NPR's Twitter users say they also access NPR on Facebook, while only 8% of its Facebook users say they use Twitter for the same purpose.

67% of NPR Twitter followers say they listen to NPR over-the-air radio broadcasts, in contrast with 76% of their Facebook fans. NPR's Twitterrati use npr.org at a similar rate as NPR Facebook fans: 59% for Twitter and 58% for Facebook.

The numbers, however, are more dramatic when looking at NPR’s digital services and platforms. When it comes to NPR podcasts, 39% of Twitter followers said they use them, compared with 29% of Facebook fans. For the NPR iPhone app, it’s 32% for Twitter and 19% for Facebook. For Android phones, it’s 11% among Twitter users and 5% on Facebook. And for the NPR iPad app, it’s 7% of Twitter users vs. 3% of Facebook users.

Another survey found that in the UK, people rely on the BBC for online breaking news: Half of those surveyed who use the internet to check for breaking news do so via the BBC News website, the study showed. Combined social media sites - including Facebook, Twitter and Youtube – were more popular source of breaking news than any one individual newspaper or commercial news broadcaster’s website. Social media was second most popular source for internet users (19 per cent) to get breaking news, according to a survey of social media habits by iCD Research.
